For A Business With Heart

Ask yourself this question.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

What I love most about this community (the people who pay attention and participate in the ongoing conversation that is “Abundant Yogi”) happens to be the biggest common denominator amongst us. It’s the shared intention driving force that unites the entire group.

We just want to do what we love – the work we feel called to do that comes easily and naturally to us – without burning out or selling out… and we want that work to fund the lifestyle of our choice.

That doesn’t mean we ALL want to make millions (although some of us do, and that’s awesome). It just means we want a sense of clarity and enoughness in our finances so we don’t feel stressed and restricted. And we want a palpable feeling of spaciousness and freedom in our schedule and our work so that we can just BE OURSELVES, undiminished, and make a difference with our gifts.

There are so many factors that contribute to that equation (which is why I never run out of stuff to write about). Here’s one that must be tended to if you really want your business to have heart.

Ask yourself this question:

What’s at the core of the core of the core of your work?

(The core of what you’re REALLY doing when you’re in your process with people, when you’re doing your job and doing it well.)

To help you answer the question, I’ll use myself as an example.

Even though what I do, externally speaking, is help people who want to do what they love without burning out or selling out to gain the skill set, support, and doable plan to enable that work to fund the lifestyle of their choice…

What I’m REALLY doing, at the core, is helping people become more precious to themselves.

I’m giving them permission to get honest about what REALLY matters to them, and then to consistently DO something about that, so their lives can be a truer expression of who they are at their core.

musclememoryNothing matters more to me than giving them that experience and helping them fully embody that shift so that it never leaves them. Then even during challenging times when they forget their value or can’t see their beauty, it will be like muscle memory. The work they did with me will come back to them through a few simple tools… and before they know it, they really will be FEELING precious to themselves again.

Now it’s your turn to answer the question.

(Sit down. Grab a pen. Write it out. You’ll get more clarity that way.)

What’s at the core of the core of the core of your work?

i.e.: What is:

  • your underlying message?
  • the energy being conveyed?
  • the true gift you’re leaving people with that they actually INTERNALIZE so that it never leaves them?

In other words, what is the transformation that you offer that means more to you than anything else, that truly makes you feel like you’re living your purpose IF, through your work, your clients/customers/students successfully embody it?

Transformation is different from change. It’s internal and it’s lasting.

Change is external and oftentimes short term. It’s all about results. Checkoffable, tangible stuff.

Results rock. And it’s important that we be able to articulate the results we offer in a way that catches the attention of the target market most suited to us. That makes our work tangibly valuable. But it’s not what gives a business heart.

What gives your business heart is what inextricably connects YOUR HEART to it.

Without the heart piece:

  • We won’t have a consistent UNDERLYING message coming through in all that we do.
  • Even though our audience may not pinpoint exactly WHY (because they’re mostly picking up on it subconsciously), they won’t fully trust us.
  • Regardless of the words we speak or write, our message will feel flat – to us and to the people we’re here to serve.
  • Our brand will feel unspecial, unmemorable, untrustworthy – quite simply because it lacks HEART.

With the heart piece:

  • We’ll get through to the hearts of our audience.
  • Our brand will carry a richer vibe that resonates with them.
  • They’ll feel met, accepted, and supported by us.
  • There will be a felt connection, and everyone will benefit from it.
  • We’ll be giving the very best of who we are and what we have to offer in a complete way and it will really transform people.

This was a hugely powerful insight for me when I really GOT IT for the first time. It changed everything. I hope it can offer you something equally as powerful.

Please… share your answers if that feels good. Let me know what you discover, and over the coming weeks, how it changes things. As always, thank you in advance for sharing this if you found it helpful.

So much love and respect.
XO,

siggie

P.S. Before I wrote this post, my husband Kraig and I were eating dinner on the couch one night and I asked him to answer the same question. He owns Mindful Marketing Academy, a very successful online school for home-based business owners needing training and support. He’s given me his permission to share his answers. I will say, it’s wild how different the external results can be from the heart piece, and yet, one is not complete without the other. Here are Kraig’s answers:

External results: “I help home-based business owners create effective marketing funnels that attract qualified, affordable leads that they can then enroll into their businesses.”

The heart piece: I help people slow down enough to actually get connected to themselves and LISTEN to their own needs. Then coming from that space, when they’re interacting with others (business prospects or personal friends), there is a much greater capacity for communication, connection, honesty and good decision making.

(Oh how I love this man’s heart.)

    Hi Kris,

Thank you for sharing so much light and magic in the world with your beautiful voice!

This is such a juicy and delightful article… the core of the core of the core of my work…

Self-love is it. Nothing more. An ability to own and understand the magic each one of us brings to every situation and every relationship. Also, that deep connection with community will give us this – that we don’t exist in a vacuum, that we need each other like we need to breathe… that we are better when we witness, grow together & behold our own reflections.

Phew! Yum. Yes. That’s the energy at the core of the core of the core for me 🙂

Thank you for helping me articulate it!
